http://www.straitstimes.com/SME%2BSpotlight/SME%2BBlogs/Working%2Btowards%2BSuccess/STIStory_482815.html BEING sick for over a week now, I realize health is important. We are the captain of our ships. We run organisations and need to make firm and decisively correct decisions every day. In order to do so effectively, we need to have a clear mind and a healthy and fit body. In other words, we need to watch our diet and have a regular exercise programme. Ok, I fully understand if you are thinking right now that you simply cannot find time to exercise because you are very busy with tonnes of work and high power meetings. Having a business to manage - and being actively involved in many committees - I have plenty of reasons not to find time for an exercise regime. This is something that I too, need to make a resolution this year to work towards. I may not be the best person to talk about this, but my brother, who is a personal fitness trainer, has taught me much. With my brother, a personal fitness trainer. So, we are all busy people. But is this a good enough reason to trade off health versus wealth? No health means no energy to build wealth! Busyness is not the best excuse to trade off time to build up our health. Good health means good physical, mental and emotional stamina to run the race. If you are unhealthy and fall ill frequently, how are you going to effectively run your organisation? If your head is unclear and body unfit, how are you going to make good clear-headed decisions that are going to affect everyone in your team and, most of all, your bottom line? How can you be a good example so that your staff is motivated to keep fit and clock in less medical certificates thereby compromising expensive man hours? When you maintain a regular exercise program, especially in the morning, your body will produce "happy" hormones such as endorphins and dopamine. These are feel good hormones that will start the day on a positive note. You will then be clear headed and attend to your work and meetings with a clear and positive mind. Furthermore, if your exercise is intensive enough, your body will also produce human growth hormones which will slow down the aging process and thus make you look and feel better. If you are overweight, exercising first thing in the morning is one of the best way to burn your fat calories. You see, when you wake up in the morning after hours without food, your carbohydrate level (glycogen) is low and when you exercise, your body burns more fat for energy instead of glycogen which is your body's preferred energy source. Also, avoid junk foods that are always served in meetings such as coffee, soft drinks, cookies, confectionaries, pastries etc. These are sweet foods the when consumed, causes a rush of insulin that makes you energetic at first, but your energy will come crashing down when the insulin surge is over. Is it any wonder why people are always nodding off an hour or two into meetings and feeling lethargic and sleepy after lunch? If you are unable to concentrate and have low energy levels, then how can you and your team make good decisions and produce excellent ideas? There is no such thing as no time to exercise. It all boils down to what is more important to you. If you think that exercise is important, you will find the time. It is all a matter of whether you want it or not! If you do not know how to start a good exercise program or embarking on a good eating habit, then go to http://www.sgfitness.com which is a local website with many tips and free articles on how to keep fit and healthy. If you still can't find time to workout, then read The 7 Minute Workout. But it's easier said than done. It takes discipline to do it. But it is not impossible. I'M Possible. Let's make it our resolution to work towards building a healthy lifestyle this year! |
