Turning Impossible to 'I M Possible'

77th Street's Elim Chew learns from the book "The Power of Unreasonable People".

THIS morning, a social entrepreneur shared this difference with me: Impossible vs. I M Possible.

Both phrases contain the same word. It just depends on which angle you look at a situation. Just like whether you choose to see the glass of water as half full or half empty.

It reminded me that all we need to do is change our perspective and we will change our life.

Entrepreneurs find solutions in identifying gaps for businesses and thrive in the niche as they create a business out of it. Social entrepreneurs and Innovators, however, find needs that exist in the Community and create a solution to solve social issues. They come up with sustainable business models rather than ad-hoc, one-off projects.

In fact, entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs thrive on challenges as they are able to identify issues beyond the surface deep. They have a greater desire to contribute to society and to create lasting change. They are able to overcome challenges and bring about solutions.

What Seems "Impossible" to others becomes "I M Possible" to them.

In this special breed of entrepreneurs, the vision of desiring to see change and make things happen becomes a driving force to motivate the entrepreneurial spirit. They to rise up above and beyond to seek and find solutions to overcome challenges instead of yielding and comprising to situations that seem to work against them. They make changes to the climate and environment around them to work for them.

Although all entrepreneurs have great zest for life, they also tend to get bored when things become stagnant. Many love to start something new and sometimes lose focus on what they started out to do.

To remain focused, we always have to check ourselves and realign with our vision, mission, core values and why we started out in the first place. These principles that we live by will help us to overcome obstacles and to reach the next level. We will then see the change that we set out to achieve.

I love the book "The Power of Unreasonable People: How Social Entrepreneurs Create Markets that Change the World" by John Elkington and Pamela Hartigan. It is about how people create change, make impact and made a difference in the lives of many.

In a nutshell, these are the learning points:

1) Set your vision, mission and core values.

2) Keep check and constantly realign what you do every time.

3) Do not lose focus. Do not be distracted by many other "good to do" things but focus on what you have set out to do from the beginning.

4) Expect challenges but believe that you will find or create solutions.

5) Whatever you have overcome becomes a good experience you can share.

6) You will thrive on challenges as you are stay tuned to finding solutions to situations

7) Find a group of friends who you can share ideas and experiences with. Create your own inner trust group who will be your faithful supporters through good and bad times.

8) As you work on more challenges and create solutions, you become more experienced in seeing things in greater depth and wider perspective.

9) Keep learning from others everyday. It's easier these days with the Internet and other vast libraries of resources.

10) Find a mentor in those who are better and more experienced.

11) Embrace the entrepreneurial spirit of seeing things in a positive light.

Make "Impossible" become "I M possible".
