Sometime in 2003, flyers resembling blank pages of a journal were made available at all 77th Street outlets, " Share with us your inner thoughts," the flyers said, " something you've never told, something you've always wanted to tell, your innermost secrets..."
We were overwhelmed by the number of young people who responded. Their 'voices' were heard-warming and heart-wrenching. And when we read between the lines, we could feel their desperate need to be heard.
My Voice hopes to bring release, relief and comfort to the youth, and encourage them to express themselves - something our culture and environment constrains us to do.
We believe that our collected efforts will bring awareness, reflection and acceptance.
Most of the letters in my voice have been printed in the writers' original handwriting. names have been shortened to ensure anonymity. - Elim Chew
