One Life. One Foundation

By Victor Lim Fei
CityCare

The fragility of life was the impetus for Jet Li to found One Foundation. In a privileged up close and personal interview with the man himself during the Social Innovators’ Forum organised by the Social Innovation Park (SIP), Li impresses as one who is passionate about his cause to change the world. Li was also honoured at the gala dinner as the Distinguished SIP Fellow.

The clarion call of One Foundation is simply, “One person can make a difference”. As Li muses, “instead of getting a few people to donate a lot of money, why don’t we focus on getting many individuals to donate whatever they can, even if its only one dollar”. And that is the spirit which Li hopes to impart to the world. Li reiterates that it is never about getting money; what he wants to get is the hearts of people.

One Foundation’s modus operandi is founded on the provision of transparency and accountability. Every cent donated to the One Foundation will in turn support a host of non-governmental organisations. Regular reports and updates of the donations are available on One Foundation’s website, so that donors are able to track their contributions.

One Foundation has centres in China, Hong Kong and the United States of America. Li is in the midst of setting up another centre in Singapore. He explained that the efficiency and professionalism of the public, private and people sectors have influenced his decision to expand his work in Singapore. Li also reflects that oppression in the rural areas comes in the form of poverty but oppression in cities takes the guise of high pressure and stress from urban living. Hence, Li sees the opportunity to simultaneously meet the needs of both strata by encouraging the city dwellers to contribute to the rural poor. Through their giving, the city dwellers receive spiritual support and emotional encouragements while the rural poor receive practical aid and material assistance.

Indeed, through the time of conversation, Li reveals himself as a philosopher, pragmatist and philanthropist all rolled into one. His vision, passion and sacrifice made to found One Foundation underscores the very point he wishes to make. How can the world be changed?

One by One.
